‘10 x 10 x 10’ was typed into Google. The first ten results were selected and the first sentence taken from each
of the ten results was chosen to give ten sentences in total. Ten languages were then selected (Spanish, French,
German, Italian, Portuguese, Norwegian, Russian, Dutch, modern Chinese, and Japanese).Using an online
translation service, each of the ten sentences were translated from English to a foreign language and then back
again to English ten times, using the first result as a starting point for the next. This produced a number of
variations in successive translations, which were then highlighted. At a certain points in this process, the
variations stopped.This closure occurred at different points for different languages. This process was repeated for
each of the ten foreign languages. This resulted in a thousand sentences, exploring the vagaries of translation and
the nuances of meaning that need to be confronted in global communication.
